Knor - animator

Info

Nine-year-old Babs is overjoyed to receive an adorable piglet from her grandfather. She enrolls her pet in obedience school even as grandpa fattens up the hog — which surely has nothing to do with the upcoming King Sausage competition for local butchers...

I worked as a stop-motion animator on this feature film directed by Mascha Halberstad and produced by Viking Film.

Clip from Koning Worst (King Sausage)

When Greetjes' father, butcher Tuitjes, is getting into fierce competition with the Italian butcher Smakkerelli, the idyllic village Moppel suddenly stops being peaceful. Not only is Greetje about to loose the yearly sausage competition, but also her big love Nol.

I worked as a stop-motion animator on this prequel to Knor. Directed by Mascha Halberstad and produced by Viking Film.

Weaving Time - director

Info

The installation Weaving Time was created for the MRK museum in Uden. It consists of three vertical screens side by side, showing three different animated films made out of the exact same footage.

We see a number of ritual activities that take place during one day, and how this day is repeated over the course of a lifetime according to the same pattern.

Due to the repetitive nature of rituals, separate moments in time eventually coincide. which takes us out of horizontal, chronological time and gives us access to a vertical perception of time (the eternal). By arranging the animated footage in various ways, these different dimensions of time are revealed within the same event.

Model Making

Film sets, props and other types of scale models that were used in animation. Some of the more exceptional ones are featured here by themselves.

Animation puppet designs, sculpts and finished puppets from various projects.

Finity Calling - Puppets

Info

Puppets I made for stop motion short Finity Calling produced by SeriousFilm & Walking the Dog and directed by myself.

Archipel - Puppets

Info

These puppets were used in the short film Archipel. A big part of the film has lip synch of dialogue. This was done by sculpting the mouth and lower jaw by hand to achieve very subtle movement. Some parts of the body were made of hard clay and other parts of soft clay, over a custom ball and socket armature. The hands were cast in matching colour silicone.

Cloud Messenger

Info

Multimedia performance with live dance, music, electronics and animated spatial projections.

A modern interpretation of the ancient Indian tale of Meghaduta, written by the famous Sanskrit poet Kalidasa in the 5th century. When a divine servant is banished from heaven by his master he becomes separated from his lover. Their only way of communicating is through a passing cloud which offers its help.

In an abstract space, the inabilities of human language and the curse of isolation are subjected to a multi-media exploration. With a vast range of modern means of communication at his disposal, will man ever be able to completely overcome loneliness?

Microbes in Motion

Info

For the Dutch television programme De
Which techniques do microbes use in order to propel themselves?
An animated parade of clever / cute movers.

Made out of x-rays of actual people and objects combined with drawn animation. This film suggests the impossible: a glimpse into a world too small to ever be photographed by mister Röntgen.

The complete films can be seen in the exhibition at Micropia.

Volvox

Info

Single celled organisms started forming colonies to have better chances of survival. Volvox took this to the next level, its cells divided tasks amongst each other. By doing this the colony became a link in the evolution of multi cellular organisms.

Volvox is part of the family of green algae who live in fresh water. What could be more suitable then doing this animation entirely in watercolour paints?
So that’s what I did….

The complete films can be seen in the exhibition at Micropia.

Gladiators of the Greenhouse

Info

ForThe nematode, a microscopically small worm, is a natural enemy of plague insects such as the Thrips. These tiny hunters can be used to protect organic crops.

Various flower petals were dried and photographed before being assembled into this cut-out animation. Protecting flowers is a delicate business for both farmer and animator!

The complete films can be seen in exhibition at Micropia.

Funghi in Control

Info

Fungi play an essential role in the decomposing of all organic matter in nature. Largely hidden from the eye, they are present in large numbers and form filamentous networks that can be many miles long.

2D animation was combined with real miniature sets in order to create a tangible world. In this place everything is focussed on the funcional role of the funghi.

The complete films can be seen in the exhibition at Micropia.
